This book did not begin as another parenting manual. It began as a quiet rebellion against the whole genre: we wanted to set fire to the familiar scripts, wait for the smoke to clear, and see what still glowed among the ashes.
What remained was this undeniable truth: a child is not a problem awaiting solution, a blank canvas to fill, a will to subdue, or a future résumé to engineer. A child arrives already alight—a living flame, complete with its own heat, direction, and rhythm.
Every structure we place around that flame—iron-clad schedules, plastic-wrapped praise, gold-star incentives, or the softly padded bars of “gentle” guidance—risks teaching the fire to fear its own brightness. We know this intimately. We built many of those structures ourselves, certain we were shielding something fragile.
This book is the record of our unlearning: how we began to recognize the cages we inherited and created—institutions, emotions, culture, screens—and how we learned to dismantle them not with anger, but with reverence.
