Departed Quantities: Always Aligning

What happens when the life that once fit begins to change?

A relationship may still contain love, yet no longer hold the people within it in the same way. A role may remain meaningful while becoming unsustainable. A community, vocation, belief system, or identity may have offered genuine belonging and still reach the limits of the person it was first built to hold.

Departed Quantities: Always Aligning explores how we navigate those changes without condemning the past, abandoning responsibility, or demanding certainty from the future.

Through the Tetrahedral Resonance Model (TrM), the book presents alignment not as a permanent state but as a living practice. The Lighthouse provides orientation toward Source. Resonant Sonar reads the changing field. The Sextant discerns the course. The Engine turns that discernment into action. Together, these functions help us recognize when something has begun to wobble, and respond without treating dissonance as failure.

Guided by the imagery of The Odyssey, the journey moves from orientation and belonging through changing fit, sacred pause, intentional response, departure, grief, liminality, and renewal.

The book asks: How do we belong without disappearing? How do we distinguish a difficult season from a fit that has genuinely changed? How do we separate reaction from response? Are we running from discomfort, or moving toward a more honest way of living? Can a relationship be renegotiated, or has its present form completed its work? What do we carry when a role, identity, belief, community, or relationship no longer occupies its former place?

Every living arrangement is composed of changing quantities: needs, capacities, responsibilities, values, expectations, histories, and relationships. When those quantities change, the fit may change with them. That does not automatically mean the earlier alignment was false. A harbor may have sheltered the vessel without being its final shore.

Departure is not erasure.

What leaves may remain through memory, consequence, grief, skill, tenderness, wisdom, scar, and love. These are the departed quantities: no longer present in their original form, yet still participating in what comes next.

Drawing from developmental psychology, relational systems thinking, and research on dissonance, belonging, identity, emotional regulation, goal adjustment, and post-traumatic growth, Departed Quantities offers a compassionate framework for living through change without romanticizing suffering or reducing every discomfort to a command to leave.

Some changes lead toward repair. Some require new boundaries. Some transform the shape of belonging. Some bring departure. And some ask us to remain where we are, but inhabit the life more honestly. The Lighthouse remains even when the shore cannot yet be seen.

We are never finished becoming.

We are always aligning.
